Teaching and Learning Proforma -
ENVIRONMENT

(Big Idea - Students will better understand the world around them and take individual action for positive change.)

Intended Outcomes:

Students will receive a general overview of the world's environmental dilemmas thereby understanding the global implications of their actions.

Students will examine their connection to the econsystem by looking at the influence of the environment on their lives and the impact their behaviours have on the environment.

Students will be expected to -
    identify concrete steps which they can take to improve their environment
    define air pollution, identify major causes, the effects on humans, animals, etc
    conduct investigations
    understand the use of the sun as a source of energy

Co-operative learning strategies to be modelled and practised.

Engaging students:

Prior knowledge -

Environmental awareness - discovery walk (listen, look, touch).

Discussion - What are some of the things that you think of when I say 'environment'? (Blackboard responses.)

Pictures of various types of environment discussed. When was the last time you were in one of these environments? What did you see, hear, touch, smell? Which things did you like/dislike?

Art - class mural of various environments.

Refining (students’ questions, ideas and teacher’s intentions):

What do we already know about conservation and energy? How is it used? (explain)

Discuss different forms eg water, soil, land, culture.

Find out if children are aware of energy sources eg solar power, fossil fuels, etc.

How are fossil fuels formed? Discuss the many ways fossil fuels are used and the possible alternatives there are to such vast usage.

Good reasons for trees - in groups children brainstorm.

Problems that are endangering our environment discussed.

What does environmentally friendly mean?

Extending:

The video Saving Hieronymus is shown. Children do follow up activities from pack.

Global issues - in groups brainstorm a list of environmental issues in the world today

Effect of global warming

Each child will have a booklet containing worksheets covering the various aspects discussed.

World heritage areas - why do we have them? Locate some of these.

Discuss the importance of food webs.

Culture - regions in Australia that are very different. Compare regions and discuss how the environment influences how we live. Discuss ways our community has adapted to fit the environment.

Individual projects - pollution, ozone, recycling

Art - City, town or country. Make a collage of kinds of jobs, animals, buildings in a particular area.

Cloze and comprehension sheets.

Reflecting on what we have learnt

Discuss what organsations are doing to help eg Greenpeace.

List all the things that could be done at home to help manage the problem of solid waste disposal.

List all the things that could be done at school.

List all the things that can be done in our community.

Make a chart - 'I can make a difference'.
